The retreats have been designed using passive solar architecture principles, to make the best use of the sun’s energy

Large north facing windows that let in the low winter sun, and roof overhangs that keep out the high summer sun

Well insulated to keep the warmth inside during cold weather and prevent heat from entering when it is hot

A large proportion of the building materials are steel, which is one of the world’s most recycled products

Low-E glass used to reflect the long wave heat radiation back into the rooms during Winter, and reflect the heat back outside during Summer

Bamboo timber flooring – sustainably sourced, fast growing, rapidly renewable, low manufacturing waste

Timber furniture built using ecoSelect hardwood

Many soft furnishings are made using natural fabrics from Cloth Fabric, with cushion inserts made using corn fibre

Supplies

Stationery is printed on recycled paper and card, using environmentally sound printing methods

Toilet paper, tissues and paper towel used in the retreats are all made from recycled paper

Rubbish bin liners and compost bags used are biodegradable
