ACTIVITIES

The Feathered Nest is the perfect base to discover the wonders of the region—there is something to cater for every interest including tranquil lagoons and wetlands, beautiful islands, amazing fishing and vibrant communities.

Tropical islands with white sandy beaches stretching off into the distance, lush rainforests teeming with species of wildlife not found anywhere else in the world, and friendly locals who are happy to show you all the good fishing spots: The Mackay and Whitsunday area really is the ultimate holiday destination.

Mackay is a short 30 minute drive to the south. Eat at one of the wonderful restaurants or cafes before wandering through some of its galleries, museums or heritage sites. If you head north to Airlie Beach you have easy access to the world-famous Whitsunday islands. Go for a dive on the Great Barrier Reef or simply stroll along the pristine beaches.

You will be amazed by the abundant wildlife at The Feathered Nest – make sure you take a leisurely stroll around the gardens and learn about the birds and animals attracted to the area. At the heart of the property are the purpose-built enclosures designed to showcase the collection of breathtaking Australian black cockatoos. Many of these cockatoos are rarer species which you are unlikely to see anywhere else but at The Feathered Nest.

The property also contains a rich variety of other native wetland birds including grebes, cormorants, brolgas, ducks and the Australian black swan. As you explore the lush, tropical grounds you will be able to see them in their natural habitat and hopefully gain a special appreciation for these beautiful creatures.

THE ENVIRONMENT

“The Feathered Nest blends 5-star luxury accommodation with a passionate regard for environmental and wildlife conservation. Sustainable practices are at the core of everything we do – from smart design and the best choice of building materials, to our business ethos and relationship with the communities around us.

We respect the delicate ecosystem of the property and work hard to protect the fragile environment without compromising on the quality and comfort of our retreats. The land is being carefully and progressively re-forested to return it to its natural state, with specially designed fauna corridors throughout the property giving animals a safe passage to their habitats.

Our black cockatoo breeding program is helping to conserve rare species of the bird so that generations to come can experience their beauty.

Guests are invited to learn more about conservation and environmental management, and have the unique opportunity to see wildlife outside the normal confines of zoos or tourist displays.

  • ENERGY USE – Our retreats use energy efficient compact fluorescent or LED lighting together with solar powered lighting for pathways and stairways around the property. Good design, ceiling fans and cross ventilation reduces the need for air-conditioning – but when it is required all our air-conditioning systems use inverter technology to be as effective as possible. Energy efficient gas hot water systems are installed in all the retreats.
  • ECO DESIGN FEATURES – Passive solar principles have been incorporated into the designs of the retreats with louvres providing cross ventilation and insulated walls and ceilings keeping temperatures stable. Building materials have been chosen according to their sustainability and impact on the environment. Water saving devices including shower heads, smart flush toilets and the use of recycled water for garden irrigation keeps water use to a minimum.
  • WASTE MANAGEMENT – Recycling bins are provided for guests to make it easy to recycle and help reduce landfill. Our office uses 100% recycled paper and recycles printer cartridges. We use an enviro-kleen sewage treatment system, with treated water used to irrigate the gardens.
  • ETHICAL BUSINESS PRACTICES – The Feathered Nest follows ethical business practices by committing to best practice ecological sustainability, natural area management and providing ecologically sustainable wildlife experiences.
  • ENVIRONMENTALLY FRIENDLY PRODUCTS – We provide organic toiletries for guests and only use environmentally-friendly cleaning products. Biodegradable materials and toilet tissue made from 100% recycled paper are also used.
  • SUPPORT FOR LOCAL BUSINESS AND CULTURE – We acknowledge the Yuwi and Birri Gubba peoples as the traditional custodians of this land where we live and work. Local products are used wherever possible and guests are encouraged to support local businesses.
