THE ENVIRONMENT

From the Owners:

“With the focus on protecting our pristine environment for generations to come, we believe that Ikurangi Eco Retreat is an excellent template for how sustainability can work commercially, without compromising indulgence. A place where visitors to our beautiful island can leave feeling like they’ve been a part of something that positively impacts our environment, community and economy. We want our guests to take on some of the Ikurangi way of life in their sustainability journey back home.

The importance placed on minimising the retreat’s effect on the environment was the inspiration behind using luxury safari tents (or glamping tents as they are affectionately known). The use of shallow foundations for the decking, composting toilets, sustainably sourced materials, natural and biodegradable toiletries and cleaning products and free bicycles was key to developing an eco-friendly accommodation site. Our philosophy combines the importance of guest enjoyment and comfort with our strong sustainability principles and we work hard to ensure a delicate balance between the two concepts.

We’re proud to be 2020 Mana Tiaki Eco Certified and provide eco-luxe toiletries with no single use plastics.

Centrally located in the north-east, Ikurangi Eco Retreat is 400m from the ocean reef, 5km from the main township of Avarua and 4km in the opposite direction from Muri and the best swimming beaches in Rarotonga. Being set back from the lagoon ensures the retreat and guests have a minimal impact on our marine environment.”

What we love…

Award-winning Ikurangi Eco Retreat is the Cook Islands first purpose-built eco accommodation and glamping hotel created to give visitors to Rarotonga the option of a getaway that doesn’t compromise the environment. Set amongst organic tropical gardens and local plantations with dramatic mountain views, get back to nature and indulge in a luxurious eco escape like no other.

Tell me more…

All guests enjoy a complimentary daily tropical breakfast delivered to your room featuring the organic fruit abundant on our property. Expect chia seed pudding with cacao nibs, bircher and island smoothie, croissants with smashed avocado – just to name a few.
Also included is free bicycle hire to explore the island. Day and night markets, shops and dining options are only a short cycle away. Onsite reception and tour desk is open 7 days with friendly local advice on all the island has to offer.

The overall philosophy of Ikuranfu=i Eco Retreat stems from the traditional Cook Islands concepts of sharing, conservation, respect, and hospitality. Cook Islands culture is all about protection of the land and environment, family values, warmth and generosity.

Ikurangi offers guests the choice of a fully furnished Luxury Safari Tent with outdoor “jungle” ensuite or a traditional Tropical “Are” (Polynesian style studio) with private deck. The four Safari Tents and three “Are” have been strategically placed to ensure each room enjoys privacy, overlooking the beautiful tropical gardens with mountain views.

For something really special, book the Ariki Safari Tent and delight in a private claw foot bath under the South Pacific stars and complimentary bubbles on arrival.

The Cook Islands

Situated 3,500 km (2,200 mi) northeast of New Zealand and 1,000km (600 mi) southwest of Tahiti in the South Pacific, forming part of Polynesia, the Cook Islands offer an accessible experience for travellers looking for an island-getaway. Less frequented than many of the other Pacific Islands, a visit to the Cook Islands is often compared to a visit to Hawaii before the big hotels and high-rises moved in. You won’t find that in the Cook Islands – there’s a government mandate that states no building can be taller than a coconut tree.

The entire island becomes your resort – it’s somewhat a secret paradise that delights visitors with its friendly and intimate, laidback feel, lush tropical surrounds, beautiful safe beaches, hikes, and incredible underwater experiences. It presents an ideal destination for those wanting to get away from the crowds, to relax, unwind and focus on having an enriched experience that allows you to disconnect from the major stresses of daily life and reconnect with nature and oneself. It may just be the Pacific’s best wellness destination.
