ACTIVITIES
The Daintree offers experiences for every taste and budget, whether you want to fill your days with adventure, or slow down and soak in the amazing tropical ambience of the Rainforest, Reef and beaches far from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.

Other activities, with no cost involved, include:

  • Taking a self-guided walk along rainforest boardwalks, or if you are adventurous and have appropriate footwear, enjoy a creek walk (in the water).
  • Use the supplied bird book and binoculars to catch a glimpse of a number of the hundreds of species of tropical birds.
  • Stroll along a deserted beach.
  • Have a dip in cool designated swimming-holes which Jill and Peter can recommend.
  • Pick up some supplies and cook lunch on a free barbeque, or picnic on a beach.
  • Indulgence in homemade icecream – Cow Bay has two outlets which use local fruit and ingredients and biodynamic milk.
  • Or simply, as many guests who have stayed at Wompoo recommend, enjoy sitting on the deck and observing the rainforest below, the mountain range to the west, bird calls and the beautiful sunsets.

THE ENVIRONMENT
From the Owners:

“A significant area of the property has trees with discrete open spaces as well as tranquil spots to enjoy the flora and fauna. There is a creek meandering through Wompoo that ensures a welcome retreat for quieter contemplation.

We reduce our human foot-print with thought placed on how we live and with you sharing this place, you too minimise your footprint. The spring water on our property is from an artesian fracture, we generate most of our power from solar power, and effluent is managed via a biocycle treatment plant. There is a strong emphasis on recycling waste generated, including using your food scraps for composting the fruit trees and vegetable patch. We source our cleaning and waste products from a retail outlet specialising in environmentally friendly products.

We find most people staying with us are already grounded in protecting the earth. To enhance your knowledge and better understand your immediate surroundings, we are happy to share our knowledge of the rainforest and reef processes, plus the cultural values of Kuku Yalanji country.”

Sounding Good?  Read on…

Having built their own rammed earth home 14 years ago, Jill & Peter decided to share their lovely place with other people who have a love and commitment to sustainability. So in 2015 they built their first bungalow, Mangosteen, which was followed a year later with the Rambutan bungalow. Both bungalows have rammed earth incorporated into the design as well as an open living concept to maximise views of the mountain ranges from the comfort of your bedroom and bathroom.

Wompoo Eco Retreat gets its name from the `Wompoo Fruit Dove’, a beautiful dove with an amazing purple breast, green, yellow and white markings. This bird has a very unusual call. Listening to the Wompoo is like listening to a human conversation, but seemingly muted and far away.  The retreat is so named due to the presence of this lovely bird. A bird book and binoculars are provided to guests.

The property is located in close to beautiful Cow Bay beach, with waterholes, mangroves and rainforest boardwalks nearby. While it is self-contained, several restaurants and cafes are close by, providing options to dine out.
