WALKS: At 800m above sea level and characterised by rugged mountain scenery, breathtaking lookouts, tumbling waterfalls, caves, fern gullies and more than 160km of Autralia’s most diverse walking trails, the Park comprises Australia’s largest remnant sub-tropical rainforest.
On the highest peaks, misty forests of ancient Antarctic Beech trees date back over 2000 years, whilst in the valleys crystal-clear streams cascade over moss-covered boulders into deep moutain pools. You can experience it all.

Binna Burra has been a leader in sustainable tourism in Australia for many years.
Binna Burra has dramatically reduced its environmental impacts and has also benefited financially from the reductions in energy usage.This effort was so significant that Binna Burra Mountain Lodge first earned Green Globe Certification in 2001. In doing so, Binna Burra was also the first private company in Australasia to achieve certification under the international Green Globe standards for ecological sustainability. It now been awarded Bronze Benchmark status with EarthCheck.
By following the management procedures and by applying the Environmental Management Plan, in conjunction with the Land Management Plan, Binna Burra has been successful in reducing its usage of energy and water resources, and has reduced the production of liquid and solid wastes.Specifically:
– Since the introduction of fluorescent lighting there has been a 20% reduction in electricity usage
– Changing the water heating system from diesel to gas-generated has resulted in an 88% reduction in diesel consumption
– The installation of low flow taps in all guest accommodation has reduced the daily water consumption
– The introduction of worm beds for composting of food and garden waste to be used as a fertiliser has greatly reduced the quantity of solid wastes needing to be removed from the mountain
– Binna Burra has its own sewage treatment plant
– Binna Burra has installed a UV Filtration system to our water supply as an alternative to the use of chlorine. The environmental benefits achieve through the implementation of the EMP have resulted in a quantifiable reduction in Lodge operating costs and it is projected that these initiatives will generate even more savings in the future.
Land Management and Conservation
Binna Burra understands the necessity of maintaining and upgrading current conservation standards and efforts, and the Land Management Plan incorporates a range of initiatives for future implementation. A number of management practices are already in place.
These include:
– Throughout the rehabilitation process, and when landscaping is undertaken around the Lodge, only naturally occurring native plant species are used. This serves to provide food for birds and other wildlife; attract butterflies; re-establish rare and/or endangered species; and illustrate the benefits of natural vegetation to guests
– Any development initiated by the Lodge involves minimal clearing of native vegetation and strategies have been designed and implemented to avoid the disruption of wildlife movement and breeding patterns
– For the protection and preservation of the natural environment, marked trails and signposts are regularly inspected and maintained
– To ensure impacts remain at a minimum in the future of the Lodge’s ongoing maintenance program includes:
– Evaluation of current rehabilitation practices for disturbed or degraded areas to ensure that the desired results are achieved
– Development and implementation of a comprehensive Land Management Plan
Continued monitoring of all Lodge property to ensure any problem areas are identified early and rectified using the most suitable methods
– Replacement of any non-native plants are part of the ongoing landscape maintenance
– Implementation of weed identification and control systems
– Strict adherence to maintenance plans ensuring that all drainage systems on site remain at an optimum functioning level
– Monitoring of Lodge site to identify any new erosion problems and take appropriate action to rectify these problems
– Ensuring that all new construction or landscape works adhere to drainage, soil and water management procedures.Environmental

Through its Guest Activities Program, Binna Burra Mountain Lodge strives to provide a comprehensive environmental education program to educate guests in all aspects of the local, regional, and global environment.

– At various times, scientists and other environment professionals are invited to present specialist lectures, discussions, and workshops to both guests and staff.
