THE ENVIRONMENT

From the Owners:

While still being very practical with our construction (we had a limited budget!) Graham (yes Graham is a builder) used local materials as much as possible. All hardwood was felled and milled on site. Malcolm walked his bullock team in from Derby to assist! 80-year old macrocarpa pine trees growing in our paddock were used to create the doors, window frames (all double-glazed) and joinery in each cottage. Beautiful hard dolerite stone from Mt Victoria and recycled bricks were used in construction. Services are sustainable too: enviro-cycle sewage treatment, rainwater harvested, powered by micro-hydro electric generation, gas heating rather than wood-fired and we try to minimize waste; although the latter is also up to you…

After consideration for electricity, heating, waste, vehicle use and tree plantings we are proud to say that we are better than carbon-neutral.

  • “Our eco-retreat is registered as “Land for Wildlife”.
  • All aspects of creating Tin Dragon Trail Cottages have adopted principles of ecological sustainability with the objectives of providing a comfortable eco retreat.
  • We produce our own electricity from a micro-hydro scheme. With the assistance of one good friend and an excavator driver we have built a micro hydro generation system which is capable of delivering all the power needs for Tin Dragon Trail Cottages. The water is delivered through 2.6 km of 6 inch galvanised pipe at a rate of about 20 L/sec. The working head is about 86 m. The 6 kW induction turbine was manufactured in Australia by Platypus Power based in far north Queensland.
  • Rain water is harvested for the cottages and we use an enviro-cycle system to treat waste water.
  • Our farm has a herd of alpacas, organic vegetable garden & fruit orchard, free range chooks (Australian for “chickens”) and a very friendly, but “failed” sheep dog called Rusty.”
  • You are welcome to share the produce from our organic vegetable garden, fruit orchard and hens.
