ENVIRONMENT

As part of the Accor network, Sofitel Brisbane Central has diligently worked to meet the standards set out in Ecotourism Australia’s Sustainable Tourism Certification, which is acknowledged by the Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC). The hotel successfully achieved certification in August 2023.

From the hotel:

“Sofitel Brisbane Central is delighted to announce its ongoing commitment to reducing single-use plastics in guest rooms. By removing single-use plastic amenities such as toothbrushes, combs, and shower caps from guest rooms, the hotel significantly reduces its environmental footprint. Guests now have the option to request dry amenities via room service or the online ordering service.

As part of the commitment to recycling, Sofitel Brisbane Central has partnered with Containers for Change, a prominent recycling organization in Queensland, enabling the hotel to recycle items from its housekeeping and food and beverage departments, diverting them from landfills and promoting a circular economy.

Efficient waste management is ensured through a weekly bin collection system. The dedicated team collects bins and exchanges them with clean ones, ensuring a smooth recycling process, making it easier for guests and staff to participate in recycling efforts, not only reducing waste but also enhancing the eco-friendliness and convenience of the guest experience.

Furthermore, Sofitel Brisbane Central has taken a significant step to transition to large pump amenities to reduce the environmental impact of single-use plastic bottles. Balmain amenities are now available in convenient, eco-friendly pump dispensers throughout the hotel.

The hotel is dedicated to reducing food wastage and promoting sustainable practices across its five food and beverage outlets and conferencing department.

The hotel has implemented an efficient surplus food redistribution system to minimize wastage by redirecting excess inventory from food and beverage outlets to alternative outlets, such as staff canteens, ensuring that every edible item is utilized.

A waste reduction strategy focuses on repurposing food items meeting HACCP safety requirements, creating innovative and sustainable menu options from surplus food items.

In managing animal-based proteins, the hotel emphasizes portion control and minimizing on-site food wastage by ordering pre-portioned quantities of protein, maintaining the highest culinary standards and enforcing FIFO (First In, First Out) protocols to ensure proper stock rotation and freshness while reducing the likelihood of food wastage.

Starting in late 2023, Sofitel Brisbane Central announced the incorporation of Just Water in all guest rooms and on the concierge desk.

Just Water is renowned for offering 100% mountain-sourced spring water in plant-based packaging, allowing guests to enjoy pure spring water from the Adirondack Mountains in New York. Just Water’s innovative packaging approach, with 88% of the carton originating from plants, results in a remarkable 74% reduction in carbon emissions compared to traditional plastic bottles.”
